How to Care for New Ear Piercings - Aftercare Instructions
Daily Cleaning and Care Instructions
The medical piercing procedure minimizes the risk of infection during piercing, and the proper aftercare is critical in keeping the ears healthy and free of infection.
- Never touch your ears without first washing your hands with soap and water.
- Wash your newly pierced ears (on both sides) thoroughly twice a day. Do not remove the earrings when cleaning.
- When showering and washing your hair, use liquid soap on your ears and rinse them thoroughly and gently with running water. Dry your ears gently with a facial tissue or a cotton swab.
- Supplementary cleansing is done with Blomdahl Piercing Aftercare cleansing swabs, which are gentle on the skin. The swabs make it possible to clean between your ears and the earrings and earring backs. Allow to air dry. Use a new cleansing swab for each ear, each time. Do not clean your ears or earrings with alcohol.

Tips to Keep Ear Piercings Healthy
- Make sure that the area around the holes are kept clean, dry and airy at all times.
- Cover your ears when applying make up, hair spray, spray perfume, hair-dye, etc.
- Take extra care when you are putting on/pulling off clothing over your head, in order to prevent the earrings from getting caught.
- Wait as long as possible after piercing before swimming in a pool or lake, and avoid putting your head under water. When you come out of the water, cleanse with liquid soap or with Blomdahl Piercing Aftercare cleansing swabs.
- Swimming in lakes is strongly discouraged for at least two weeks.
- Pools have less risk because they are chlorinated but ears should be cleaned when you get out of the pool.
- Swimming in the ocean has the least risk due to high salt content of water.
When to Remove the Original Piercing Earrings
After six weeks you can change to new earrings. To remove the ear piercing earrings:
- Wash your hands and ears thoroughly.
- With one hand, take hold of the front of the earring.
- With the other hand, wriggle the earring back until you feel it loosen.
- Carefully remove the ear piercing earrings and put in new, clean earrings.

Ongoing Care
- It takes up to a year before the holes are completely healed so ongoing care is important.
- Always wear earrings. If you go without, the holes can shrink and/or close completely.
- Take extra care when changing earrings. The skin that has grown within the holes is still thin and delicate and can easily tear, which may cause an infection.
- Always make sure to wash your earrings and your hands before the change, and make sure that the area around the holes is kept clean, dry and airy.
- If you use earrings with earring backs, these should not be pressed tightly against the back of the ear.
- The risk for developing a contact allergy is at its greatest during the first year after ear piercing. This is why it is extra important to wear allergy safe earrings during this time.
- Redness and/or swelling and/or pain and/or rashes are indicative of a possible infection. If you have these symptoms remove the earring and cleanse. If there is no improvement the following day, contact your doctor.

Medical Ear Piercing
There will be minor discomfort after the procedure and some soreness in the following days, but material pain is unusual. Dr. Kanu is available by phone to address any concerns.
Skin Friendly Jewelry
Blomdahl piercing earrings are designed to facilitate rapid healing, and so that you can easily change to regular earrings after the healing period.
Our piercing earrings are made from skin-safe medical grade titanium or medical plastic for people with sensitive skin and allergies to jewellery—perfect for babies, kids, and adults.
An earring back for optimal healing
When air can circulate around a new piercing, it will heal better. That is why the earring backs on Blomdahl piercing earrings are always fixed at the tip of the post, where they also encapsulate the tip.
The earring backs cannot be moved like on regular earrings. That way the air can always circulate around the new piercing.
Airy healing with longer posts
In order for the new piercing to be kept airy and to heal better, it is important that the piercing earring has the right length.
But earlobes differ in thickness. For slightly thicker earlobes Blomdahl has developed piercing earrings with extra long posts.
Safer to change earrings
After the healing period, you can remove the piercing earrings and change to other earrings. However, the skin that has grown within the holes is still delicate and the holes may shrink a little.
Blomdahl's piercing earrings have been designed so that the holes will be slightly wider in the beginning and thereby not get so easily damaged when you change earrings.
Follow Up and Aftercare
After the medical piercing procedure you will receive detailed printed aftercare instructions, as well as have ongoing access to our aftercare video.
Our doctor or nurse will review the necessary daily cleaning procedure with you to ensure that you know what to expect, and what to do to keep your child (or yourself) free from infection.
In the written aftercare instructions you are advised to clean the new piercing twice a day, using soap and water or Blomdahl Piercing Aftercare cleansing swabs, which are gentle on the skin and easy to use.
You will be given Dr. Kanu's phone number for quick access to the doctor with any questions or concerns during the healing period. Complications like infection are rare with our procedure when the aftercare instructions are followed – and you will have the security of knowing that our doctor is ready to help if needed.
