This is an important problem. Unless you fix it, you will not be able to use your Apple Watch. Here is how you can troubleshoot this problem:

As the message state, update your iPhone. Here is how:

  • On your iPhone, tap Settings > General > Software Update. If there is an update available, update your iPhone by tapping Download and Install. This will let you update your phone wirelessly.
  • You can also update your iPhone using a computer. Simply connect your iPhone to your computer. Open Finder (or iTunes if you are running an older version of macOS) and select your device and click General or Settings, then click Check for Update. And if there is an update, click Update.

If this does not solve your problem, and when you try to update your iPhone, your iPhone says "your software is up to date", there are few things you should try and know. If this is the case, here is what you can do and what you should know:

  • If your Apple Watch Series has been updated to watchOS 6,  your watch will not work with your iPhone 6 or earlier. You can pair your watch (Apple Watch Series 1 or later) with an iPhone 6s or later with iOS 13 or later. This is because watchOS 6 requires iPhone 6s.
  • You may be wondering if you could downgrade watchOS on your Apple Watch. The answer is no, you cannot. It is not possible to downgrade watchOS on your Apple Watch.

So do you have an iPhone 6s and later and still see this message? Here is what you can do:

  • Restart your iPhone:
    • iPhone X or iPhone 11: Press and hold the volume up (or down) and the side buttons together until you see the slider. Then slide the slider. Wait until your phone completely powers off. Then press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
    • Other iPhone models: Press and hold the side or top button until you see the red slider. And then slide the slider. Then again press and hold the side or top button until the Apple logo appears.
  • If restarting does not resolve your problem, try force restarting your device. Here is how:
    • iPhone 8 or later: Press and release the volume up button and press and release the volume down button and now press and hold the power button until your device restarts.
    • iPhone 7 models: Press and hold the top and volume down buttons together until the Apple logo appears.
    • iPhone 6s: Press and hold the home and the side buttons together until your device restarts.
